Welcome to the PE Department
Physical Education provides pupils with the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential: developing their physical, mental, emotional and social competencies.
We strive to achieve this by delivering an engaging experience across a variety of activities that are differentiated and challenging for all pupils.
Participation Policy
All pupils are expected to always bring their PE kit for every lesson.
A suitable PE kit includes:
- White top
- Dark bottoms (shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms)
- Jumpers and jackets should be brought for outside lessons.
A suitable change of clothes is required for PE to ensure that pupils are able to fully participate and progress within the subject.
For those who are injured or unwell, they should ensure that a note is brought from home and given to their teacher. The teacher will then provide them with a different role that will allow them to take part in the lesson.
PE in the BGE
The BGE experience within Physical Education allows pupils to develop their confidence, resilience, responsibility and interpersonal skills while working individually and co-operatively with others.
From S1-3, pupils will experience a wide range of activities including Basketball, Badminton, Football, Gymnastics, Fitness, Table Tennis, Dance, Hockey, Dodgeball and Social Dance.
From these lessons, pupils will develop an understanding of the rules, skills, knowledge and understanding of the activities. Each activity will focus on improving pupils’ Cognitive Skills, Physical Competencies, Personal Qualities and Physical Fitness.
S3 pupils will have the opportunity to work through and complete the National 3/4 Factors Impacting Performance booklet. This will be completed throughout their time in S3 and provides them with the opportunity to gain a pass and qualification for N3/4 Physical Education.

CORE PE
Pupils in S4-6 will still be expected to fully participate in core PE on the periods they have this on their timetable. They must ensure they bring their PE kit, as well as bringing a note if unwell or injured.
Pupil focus groups are used in the design of the Senior Core Curriculum to maximise engagement and motivation, as well as providing an opportunity for personalisation and choice.
National 4/5 PE
This course enables candidates to demonstrate and develop movement and performance skills in physical activities. From this course pupils will:
- Develop approaches to enhance physical performance in a range of skills across a number of activities
- Develop knowledge and understanding of factors that impact on performance
- Develop the ability to monitor, record and evaluate their own performance development
The National 4 course consists of:
- One off performance in an activity of the pupils choice (successful/unsuccessful)
- Factors Impacting on Performance booklet (successful/unsuccessful)
The National 5 course consists of:
- 2 One Off Performances – out of 30 marks each (Internal assessment)
- Portfolio which is out of 60 marks (submitted to the SQA)
The portfolio is completed around one activity. From this the pupils will reflect upon their performances, identifying strengths and weaknesses within. From this, they are able to identify areas of their performance for development. They will then create a training programme to develop the identified weakness. They will then monitor and analyse the programme.
Higher PE
The Higher course is divided into 2 parts:

Candidates develop their thinking skills through planning, problem solving and analysing performance.
