Mathematics
Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics
Mathematics is important in our everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives.
Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.
Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society. Numeracy is not just a part of mathematics; it is a life skill, which supports all areas of learning.
We want all pupils at Hamilton Grammar to be confident with Mathematics and Numeracy. We expect you to work hard, ask for help and, most importantly, be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them.

Why learn Mathematics?
One of the most common questions we are asked is “When am I ever going to use the maths I am learning in real life?”
ALL of the mathematics that is taught at Hamilton Grammar is used in some area of the real world. Algebra and equations are used by economists, engineers and scientists. If you go to college or university to study any of these subjects then the maths you learn here at Hamilton Grammar will be the foundation for the more complex maths you will go on to learn.
However, one of the most important skills that mathematics teaches you is problem solving. You will develop skills that will help you analyse a problem then set about solving that problem. All employers need people who can do this.
